Thought id post this up as it?s been a popular topic. For those of us who have the early Angel Eyes i.e. 501 bulbs - they are no way near as bright as the later versions.

Over the months I have tried several canbus LEDs but unless running at night time you can?t see the white light during the day. So the challenge was to find some bulbs that are better than the standard 501s but also more up to date.

In the end I have managed to find the following bulbs, the iDrive is happy and they give of a much greater light than 501s - 503H 501 style wedge bulb 12v 10w HALOGEN - http://www.consumabulbs.com/files/bdet.php?id=595

If you have the 501s and are looking for a step up, I recomend giving these a go.

This is for E60s which have 501 powered angel eyes. You simply replace the bulb - like for like

Im making my own hi-power lights for my crappy non-xenon headlights.
It will include one Cree XP-G per ring. With an output of about 500 lumen per ring.
and will be fully reversable, no cutting of headlight or wires.

The tests so for looks great.

Nice, those Cree XP-G looks rather sizable, would they fit in the space?

Yes, the hole for the 501 bulb/socket is about 11mm.
I have found a Cree XP-G mounted on a 9mm printboard.

I will be mounting the LED on top of a 40-50mm round copper rod with thermal epoxy and have a heatsink at the other end.
the heatsink will be sticking out of the backside of the headlight. (but you can still close the cap)

My only problem now is the heat generated from the low-beam bulb, it almost melted my other ebay LEDīs (which are non-visible in daylight)

Without the heatsink the copper rod is very hot, but with the heatsink you could easily hold it in your hand for a longer period.
I will be cutting the height of the heatsink and adding af small 30x30mm 12v fan at the end for maxium cooling.
I have had it turned on for long periods of time at my office (5-8 hours) with no problems at all.

See the attached picture for my first test.
This is without a lens, the LED angle is about 120 degrees, i have found af small lens that will be focusing the light better into the angel eye ring.
The light color is white not greenish as my mobile phone camera suggest.

Nice, this is a great step for the pre-LCI halogen people. This potentially will be brighter than the Mtec solution for pre-LCI xenons.

Yes with the proper skills and cooling you could in theori mount two XP-G per ring, that would total in over 4000 lumen.

The led it self is only 3x3 mm, and the light output is stunning.
