3-er 3 series E90 side mirrors on the 5-er 5 series E60

My Ride: BMW E60 520d SE Saloon M47 2.0dTitanium Grey II, Grey−Dakota Leather, Visibility Package, Media Package, Through Load System, Lumbar support − fr seats, Automatic Air Conditioning−Advanced, High beam assistant, Hi−Fi Loudspeak

I think the standard 3 series E90 mirrors are a lot nicer than the 5 series E60 mirrors. Infact before the LCI I could have bet that BMW would change those in the LCI but they haven't.
I'm wondering if the 3 series mirrors can be fitted to the 5 series? What modifications would be required to make it work.

Are they much smaller than M5 mirrors?

sorry to revive this thread after 4 years, but a google-search did not reveal anything new...
has anyone tried this or seen it done??
I looked at the mirrors of an E92 today and they were not smaller than the E60's, but certainly much more presentable

Someone on E90post.com swapped out their mirrors and posted some pretty good pics of the disassembly.

The E60 has 3 torx screws holding down the side mirrors just like the pic but I'm not sure if the spacing or configuration is a 100% match. I did the M5 mirror rep swap but I can't remember if the pattern is right.
