I was dealing with this a few weeks ago with my dealer:

The thing is that you can put 245 or 7-8.5 as well as you can put 225 on 6-8. But not with BMW E60 because it would cause all the electronic systems malfunction (ABS, DTC...) because the outer total diameter would be messed up. It is not about the wide about about the tire side profile (40/45/50)

therefore for E60:

17" setup
8-245/45
8-225/50

18" setup

8-245/40

However guys:
READ the tire sticker on your driver's side inner B pillar !!!!! It lists all the tire setups possible for E60 !!!

I am not sure I follow you. Rim width does not influence the overall diameter. 225/50 on a 7.5 or 8 width would preserve the same diameter!

I dont see how going half an inch wider would confuse BMWs electronics

With all the electronics on board I don't think I want to try anything not recommended.

The thing is like this, yes the rim width 7.5 or 8 does not effect diameter.
I was refering to all of the above about the whole set up. You must know that one thing is that a rim and tire are out together other thing is wheter it is suitable for E60.

However as to what tire can fit rim sizes there you go: (But again, this does not meat you can put it on E60)

well for instance runflat tire defect warning works exatly like this, the moment the tire is flat it is smaller, smaller diamter = electronic reads it as a flat tire
and we all know that it is very sensitive system

DTC react in milliseconds therefore any size disbalance is very crucial too

that is what BMW told me as well and I quiet believe it

Yes tire 225/50 can be fitten to rim 7,5-8 as confirmed by the orange table below taken from a tire shop web.[b]

Anyone knows ?
That was asked earlier... Should be 8" but some manufactuers list 7.5" as ok...

Thanks

ABS, DTC and the FTM will all work fine but BMW would not officially sanction 'unofficial/unapproved' sizes... There's enough recommended options to suit most people?

If you read the mods section of this forum, you will see people have put all size tires on the vehicle. The sizing chart is typcially for what tire will fit with no possibility of rubbing. The same is true if you get the recommendations list from a tire shop. Does not mean you can't push the limits. Also, in many cases, it depends on the rim and offset.

The width will not affect the electronics. The overall diameter - maybe, but again, people are doing all types of things with tires. The FTM is sensitive, but it does get initialized which I assume is setting the overall diameter of the tire. The software is the same if you are running a 16" tire on a 525 or a 18" tire on a 545. What happens to DTC - not sure, I don't know the ins/outs of the system. I would assume the control system looks at changes in wheel speeds and accelerations as well as YAW and not a standard set point that the tire makes so many revolutions per mile. ABS is the same, looking at the changes in wheel speed.

If anything I would assume you want to keep the ratio between the front and the back similar. But gut feel is this will have nothing to do with the control systems.

tyre pressure wise, do I inflate my winter non-runflats as BMW says on the drivers door? I presume their advice is for run-flats

That's a good question as I've just ditched my run-flats... I would of thought that the recommended pressures wouldn't change though? The only difference is with a loss of pressure?

Perhaps someone could confirm?

The pressure recommendations are for both RF's and non RF's.

BMW wheel/tire recommendations are ( info source www.BMW.se):

225/55 R 16 - 7J x 16

225/50 R 17 - 7 1/2J x 17

245/45 R 17 - 8J x 17

245/40 R 18 - 8J x 18

275/35 R 18 - 9J x 18

245/35 R 19 - 8J x 19

275/30 R 19 - 9 1/2J x 19

If memory serves me right there were two recommendations for 225/50 17 for example. I think one was 2.4front/2.7rear and the other one something like 2.3/2.4. I find it confusing, it would help if someone has a picture of the driver's door sticker. I think one of the columns has the run-flat star on top of it.
