My Ride: 535d (4/05) M Sport, Carbon black, Black dakota leather, Sport seats, Xenon, Navi prof, Hi-fi pack, AS, BT, PDC, Sunroof
will an 8 inch rim stretch the 225 tyres too much? Bmw's original fitment for a 225/50 is a 7.5 inch rim. Just getting prepared for the winter...

My guess is that 8" should work. So not what?
Look up the tire manufacturer on line and download thier specs. They will list the approved rim width.
For a 225/50, Continental lists 6.0 to 8.0. So according to thier specs it should work. However, you are at the top of the range, so I am not sure if you will get that bowed look where the tire looks too small for the rim.
If you use a tire calculator and talk to a tire guy, you can also investigate some options, like going up to a 235 that is made for up to an 8.5" rim. Also, if you are looking at changing rims, the rim offset does come into the picture.
The e60 is made for some pretty big tires, so you have a lot of room to play with.

I am not an expert, I have just down loaded a couple of tire data sheets for my upgrade investigation and they are sitting on my desk in front of me.
A good tire shop can give you all of the ones they know will work for sure.

Both comments where from a generic guide to size to rim. However, you're right - check the individual spec sheet of the tyres in question... Some list 245/45/17 on 7.5" rims and 225/50 on 8" rims...

checked the manufacturers website, and they list that the wheel is to be used with either 225/50 or 225/45 on the E60, it has a TUV certificate as well, so I guess it will be ok. Its a Dezent type B btw.
p.s. if anyone has a picture with that wheel on any BMW I would be very grateful if you give me a link

The thing is that you can put 245 or 7-8.5 as well as you can put 225 on 6-8. But not with BMW E60 because it would cause all the electronic systems malfunction (ABS, DTC...) because the outer total diameter would be messed up. It is not about the wide about about the tire side profile (40/45/50)
therefore for E60:
17" setup
rim 6-8 =245/45tire or
rim6-8 = 225/50tire
18" setup
rim7.5-9=245/40tire
However guys:
READ the tire sticker on your driver's side inner B pillar !!!!! It lists all the tire setups possible for E60 !!!
