My Ride: BMW 550i Carbonschwarz metallic Full Options... except night vision !
Default

Hi all,

For those who don't know me, I'm french and I live in Paris.
I owned a 06 550i but had to sell it in december 2008.
I've just bought an other 550i, but a 08 LCI version.
Platinum Gray, Sport Package, fully loaded...

I will add some pictures of the car but I would like to get your opinion about the exhaust.
Would you keep the stock exhaust or change it for a RPI one ?
RPI is really doing such a great job and the sound seems to be magnificent !
However, I do appreciate the stock exhaust. But sometimes, I find it a bit too discrete.

- For those who changed for a RPI exhaust, you have never regretted it ?
- With a Kick Down, inside the car, is the sound much different or it is just a bit deeper and louder than the original one ?
- Do you notice a sensitive changing of quickness and throttle response, before and after ?
- Is the efficiency better with a RPI exhaust ?
- If ever I want to change back to the stock exhaust, is it possible to do it correctly ?

Thanks guys.
Greetings from FRANCE.

Armen,
I'm not a 550 owner but did install the RPI GT cat-back exhaust in my car a month or so ago along with intake manifold and ECU changes etc. You can check out my thoughts in the link below starting at post # 87. There is also a short Youtube video which would allow you to get a feel for the sound etc. Although the dynamics of my install will differ from your system given the increased engine size etc, the information may prove beneficial to you.

Let us know what you decide to do. Cheers!

Thank you very much Georgieb !
Could you please tell me which E60 you own ?
So as far as I understood, at idle the sound remains pretty discrete, but as soon as you push the envelop, it's shouting beautifully.
It is pretty much what I like, just like you I don't want a noisy car at idle, especially when it is rush hour with lots of traffic.

My friend here on the forum, Jashy, has the RPI on this LCI 550 with the resonator removed.
Took the car for a Spin -- didnt want to get out --- Shit load of fun with the exhaust note ---

Loved it

Thanks for your opinion TheRacerBoss

I don't think I would remove the resonator but I have no doubt of the crazy sound

So for you, no hesitation, I must get the RPI right ?

Armen,
I have a 525i with sufficient engine mods, inake mods, exhaust mods and ECU mods to have it perform almost at the level of a 530i. Yes as I mentioned in my previous post, I'm the kind of person that doesn't want everyone to hear me coming down the street unless I intend them to by stomping on the gas, and this is exactly what the RPI exhaust system offers. My wife took my car out just last night and as she ripped off (she has a "heavy" foot), I was again reminded of how great the exhaust sounds. You almost can't get an appreciation for it by driving the car but sitting on the curb as it goes by has a whole different and positive effect.

The only thing I want is not to regret my stock exhaust.
I am a real "stock car" man and it would be the first time I would change anything on my car.
I know that most owners change exhaust on 5-Series.
I just like the pretty sound of the stock exhaust but I feel attracted by the loudness of the 550i.
That's my current dilemma.

Here's a YouTube sound/vid clip of the exhaust running on a 550i.

And here's a sound/vid clip of my exhaust. The 550i definately has more of a "rasp" to it but this is probably again because of all the extra HP at the flywheel.

Thanks.
As you can guess, I've watched ALL the videos with the 550i RPI exhaust.
Very nice sound on the 525i, nice !

However, I do not know how it sounds inside.
And that is my only interrogation.
I don't want the exhaust to drone a lot when I'm cruising.
I want it to shout when I'm pushing the envelop.

The thing is that I just love the throaty sound inside the car when I do a Kick-Down.
I would like to preserve that sound globally but with a deeper sound.
Hope the sound does not change completely.
I don't want the car to lose its identity even though I know that this 4.8 V8 does not express itself as much as it can.
