Why is there no compass in my 2004 E60 (Premium, Cold Weather)

I drove a 07 325Xi while my 530i was in for service and they have one in the mirror.

Any options for adding this? Seems like a huge oversight.

Was at the dealer a couple of weeks ago and the E60 accessories catalog shows the mirror with compass. A shame it was an after thought but it is offered. Don't know if there are any retrofit issues with early model E60's, ask the dealer...

This was available as a dealer installed accessory back in 2004, so it should still be available. As I recall it was pretty expensive.

Just saw this, http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=39010 Dinan530 put in the E90 mirror in a 2004.

It is still an extra-cost option that you can get fitted. Not the cheapest of things and, IMHO, totally useless if you have nav in the car.

Yes it was available back in 2004 but the back then if you got the compass in the mirror, you lost the universal remote option. The mirror offered now has both.

I am not sure whether the cars have a compass per se. The Sat Nav receives three points of information (latitude, longitude and elevation) from satellites. When you start moving, it computes the continuous change in these data points and is able to derive your direction of travel and speed (when there is no satellite coverage - in tunnels, for example - the Sat Nav dead-reckons this computation from your speedo speed and steering wheel inputs). Now that it knows your direction of travel based on change of latitude and longitude, it is also able to derive your compass heading, which it shows in your Sat Nav window depending on your map settings - Map North shows no compass arrow, Map in Direction of Travel shows a compass arrow and, if you have Nav Pro and you put the right side of the screen to "Vehicle Position" you will get a compass arrow all the time.

As an aside, the fact that our cars also receive and process altitude information means that the system should theoretically be able to compute rate of climb and rate of descent. Not really useful to us as we aren't flying (not in the three-dimensional sense, that is )
