We never have snow in Holland, but we have the x-drive version on sale for a while already, so I do not see why the UK should not get this.
Like people have said;"UK have right hand drive cars, that may do it more difficult for X-dirve".

Another reason for them to wisen up and join the Western Alliance of freedom and democracy completely by driving on the right side .
Since we are at it. Please stop taking money from us and join the EU completely also. See you in 6 weeks in Germany

Is there a demand for them then?

In the UK or Holland? Either way, I can give you total number of sales per month for E60 in Holland, but not the split per type. There is 1 (ONE) used 530ix for sale in Holland, but that could be a dealership owned one.

There seems to be a surprisingly high demand for the xDrive.

In Austria, Italy and Switzerland 65 % of sold E60's are xDrives.
In Austria 80% of the 530d Touring models where sold as xDrives.

In Germany 18,5 % of sold new BMW in 2005 where xDrives and
every fourth BMW sold in '05 was a xDrive,
these figures includes X3 and X5 models.

This trend seems to get even stronger in 2006.

The official reason BMW do not sell Xdrive on the Five Series in the UK is because we have less disposable income because we pay the most into the EC so that they can keep the network of roads going to support left hand drive cars!
Seeing as Audi sells the allroad in the UK & Volve sells its XC70 it cannot be engineering cost.
