how far were you from where you parked your car? where did you keep the key?

it happened to me once... when i got to my car from friend's apartment i found all my windows were rolled down. Shoot! I though.. what happened?
I realized i had the car key in my back pocket and had been sitting on the floor chatting and i was about 4 storey above my car.

the remote were activated by my butt!

 

Yep, I managed to roll down all the windows while I had a hose-pipe in my hand washing the car. Caused a bit of a panic

 

Sorry to hear about your problem. This happened to me on my last E46. Thankfully no damage was done as there was no rain or snow involved. I caused it by sitting on my key while inside my house and it opened the car and lowered all the windows. The car was sitting outside on the street about 25 feet away. I didn't find out it had happened until I got up the following the morning.

I rang my local dealer about the problem as I did not know what had caused it and was concerned it was a fault. They suggested I might have accidently caused it with the key and suggested I try it myself deliberately. They said its a common issue in the UK, and get loads of people causing it, usually with keys in pockets or bags. I had a go myself, sitting on the key, and sure enough, right through my double glazing the car and windows opened. I'm now very careful where I put my key.

During a blizzard this winter I had the key placed in my pocket, and decided to sit down. This caused the trunk to open. Luckily it didn't capture too much of the snow

Have been hunting high and low for a tiny but rigid box to fit my key while it is in my pocket but to no avail.

Twice I had my E60's windows opened without my knowledge overnight in my exposed garage. At first I thought it must be a glitch but later realsied that I could have caused it myself when I am on the second floor of my house. Fortunately it was a dry night

Now, when I park my car in a carpark, I wouldn't want to put the key in my pocket until I am away from the car.

Activated a feature in the i-Drive that will lock all doors if none opened. This feature will at least help to lock the doors if one accidentally press and unlock from the remote key but I guess it can't help much if the windows are opened as well

If you are concerned about accidentally opening your car with the remote, why not let your dealer deactivate this function so that you no longer have to worry about it? If you, after deactivating it, still want to open your windows/sunroof before entering the car, you can still do so by putting your key in the keylock of your door and keep the key in the unlock position.

 

I understand that the accidental keypress probably happened while seated, etc. and not really about the tight pants -- that is unless it's a back pocket thing. In that case, it makes sense that sitting down would press the buttons.

I guess I'm just wondering how this sort of thing never happened to me in the 6+ years of driving a BMW with this feature in the key. The only thing I can think of is that I never put the keys in my back pocket!

JohanDC's suggestion might be the best advice -- especially if it's used with the automatic relock feature in iDrive.

Either way, I feel horrible for the people who's cars suffered damage as a result of this.

 

I set my E39 alarm off more than once while at the keyboard or working in the yard with keys in my pocket and car securely parked in the garage. Sometimes squatting or maybe just crossing my legs. It is a hazard if you always have the keys in the pocket as I do.
