I've been to every parts store in my area except NAPA which was closed on the sunday I looked and the only place that "supposedly" had what I was looking for was Sears. Turned out the socket wall on their product is too thick to get between the plug and a metal sleeve built into the cylinder head. I too felt "it's not complicated" because I "have changed well over 100 spark plugs in my life" too - so imagine my frustration when I ended up wedging the socket in the cylinder head and spent the better part of an afternoon getting it out.

It's not complicated - IT'S DIFFERENT and BMW made it that way. A few people have figured this out while others are asking for help. So instead of patronizing comments why don't you post a link from any of the typical Auto Parts stores where one could get this BMW compatible part for $1 like you just said?
There's no need to act/type/talk like that. OK??????????????????????????????
My comments weren't meant to be patronizing.
BMW are not different or complicated, only when it comes to analyzing them via electronics.
I guess all of my 6 bimmers are different then the avg bmmer. i'll take a pic of the socket later and upload it although I believe I've already done this in the past week.
There are a few members here who I could easily help but I don't because of their attitudes and so I never comment on their posts.

I don't remember the size the plug needs I just have two that work and their in my toolbox chest and they work on M52, M54, S54 and N52 engines.
Well right now I am a bit rubbed the wrong way now so I'm done helping or giving suggestions this beautiful sunday afternoon so why don't you find it yourself. good luck with your project.

FYI that metal sleeve is removable and you will find that it's held in place by a snap ring. if you get stuck i'm sure that sleeve can/would pull right out with your tool. I changed a valve cover gasket on N52 before and put the sleeves in last. My engines don't have them but same socket works just fine.

For the N54 engine you will need something that looks like this:

Clicky

Please note the spark plug pic and the paragraph above it that starts with the word "SPECS". I'll post my own pic that compares the "thinness" between the Sears and BMS tool soon.

AchtungE60 - I apologize for sounding offensive.

And here is a comparison pic. You can see the socket grooves and how much thinner the BMS socket walls are.
