No regrets, and actually a good feeling not thinking about the prices anymore. And driving a 545i in Germany means, you really don't look at the prices anymore. It would drive you crazy. I don't even know the current gas price...

It would help to if "people" in China understood the global warming and polluting effects of the coal based powerplants that 80+% of the country uses to generate electricity for a growing industrialized economy. Aside from the obvious global warming problems this raises, the sulfur oxides emitted from these power plants creates sulfuric acid rain around the world, not just in China. Thank heaven that most Chinese people cannot afford automobiles or China would become not only the largest worldwide polluter in electricity generation, but also one of the largest polluters from automobile internal combustion engines.

In China it's not only power plants (I have started 6 in there and going there again in May), but private people who use coal briquettes to make food, heating etc. That is now prohibitted in Beijing. Dust is also big problem because of type of soil. once a year when crop is harvested they burn straws and that makes huge smoke what you really can see and smell everywhere.

Former Eastern Europe, Asian and African countries are biggest SOx and NOx polluters PER kWh. US is THE biggest in terms of total!

So maybe there is much more to do before we have to start to think how much we make pollutants with our CARS to the air, water and soil.

I get my money from Commissioning of power plants, but don't kill me because of that. (being so big polluter)

I Sweden the tax rates for gasoline have increased a lot. For 98 lead-free gasoline we pay 10, 96 SEK/litre = $1,53/litre = 1,17 euros/litre.

At the moment in Finland generally between 1,21-1,25 ? per litre 98 (=regular)

When price is over 5,- ? per litre, only friends from this forum can be seen on the road.

Gas mileage actually factored heavily in my decision to buy a 5 series.? All my criteria intersected and steered me towards the 06 530i with its good highway mileage (among its many other attributes).? I just got the car, so it remains to be seen how it does, but I anticipate getting at least 30 with it.? My current car is rated at the same highway mileage (30) and my average is generally 30 or so due to what is predominantly highway driving.

UUron,

What are your impressions of the 06 530i? How is the performance like compared to the 05 model? I'm considering purchasing a 06 530i.

thanks

I only briefly drove a 2005 530i that was equipped with a steptronic auto. Heck, I've only briefly driven my own 2006 - it has 16 miles on it, 12 of which are attributable to me.

Naturally I'm keeping the RPMs low, and it's tough to do an apples to apples comparison since mine is a manual transmission, but the engine seems to pull quite a bit even at low RPMs on the highway. Just barely applying throttle in 5th or 6th gear is enough to quickly increase speeds from 50 or 60mph up to 80 or so. I haven't had the engine past 4K RPM, but I'll let you know as it gets more broken in.

Very good analogy! I have talked to some other people and for a V8, the 545i doesn't get that bad of gas mileage.

Of course fuel consumption depends on HOW you drive too.

Well it surprisingly NOT ! - Believe it or not, my 545i consumption is only a bit more than on my wife's 1.8T 4 cyl GTI !!

I pay about $40 a week, the GTI is about $30 because of the smaller tank and I drive more miles per tank.

You even doesn't have to pay a GAS GUZZLER tax in the US which is typical to 4+ liter engines..

So... I guess BMW did a good job with this engine..

Your casual observations seem to jive with the figures on http://www.fueleconomy.gov.

A side by side comparison of the two cars shows a yearly fuel cost of $1680 vs. $1243 between an 05 545i manual and an 04 GTI 1.8T manual. $437 difference... at ~$10 per week, you're coming in at about $520 more per year driving the 545i. Not a bad tradeoff.

$10 a week? not bad! I rather do that and bring lunch to work one extra day a week instead of going out, and thats it!

And... being a driver who drives a bit more than the national average these numbers sums up just right..
