I'm not sure how the 04 is set up, but my 07 jumps best when directly connected to the battery.
My battery is behind the right side panel in the trunk.

Any codes? Can you use INPA to read CAS module? I just had that happen to me. Used INPA and got a Starter malfunction code from the CAS module, changed the starter et voilá! That being said, a no crank no start can be a ton of stuff on these cars from battery (even with all light on) VIM, CAS module itself, keys, and a few others. If you search no crank no start on a few BMW forums you'll find a TON of threads about this.

BMW specifically tells you NOT to jump the battery directly at the battery. You are supposed to use the under hood connections.

I spent half an hour one day trying to jump from under the hood. It just wasn't getting enough power.
Then I finally gave up on that--tried the battery, and it worked instantly.

You guys can do what you want, that's for sure. These cars have a lot of sensitive electronics, that's enough for me to not do it. You also have occasional battery explosions during jumping due to battery internal failures or accumulated hydrogen gas.

DO NOT jump the car at the battery. Not only do you risk explosion but both battery cables contain additional equipment that can get damaged (and are very expensive). The negative cable contains the IBS microprocessor, and the positive cable assembly includes an explosive charge that goes off when the airbags are activated to disconnect the battery to prevent fire. You will get a rude awakening if you accidently set off that charge.
It is possible the jumper cable was not solidly attached to the ground lug on the drivers side (US models) strut tower, or you have a bad ground connection at the lug. The cables from both of the connections under the hood back to the B+ and ground connections in the battery compartment are large in gauge (substantially larger than your battery cable conductors) and will do a good job of conducting with very little loss of voltage or current.
