Winter Tires/Wheels - Should I Downsize to 17"???

Did a search, but not much answers.
I have a 2007 530i with sport package (245/40/18). I need to purchase winter tires/wheels from tirerack. I just wanted to know is it better to downsize to 225/50R 17 (is this the correct size for winter?) or should I stay with 245/40/18?

I run summer 19's on my 550i and plan on moving to 17's for my snows - probably 225/50's (taller and wider).
Why 17? Mostly for potholes & all the other road imperfections that happen in cold. I think a 17" will handle it all better than an 18.

I have an 04 545i sport pkg and just bought a set of 17 e39 rims/snows. I went to the tirerack and input my car yr,mk,model including sport pkg and it returned the 17inch solution in with 225/50/17s.

There are some decent looking wheels on tirerack.com and it looks like a non-rft package, wheels, tires, FTM's, mounted and balanced including S&H to NJ is running about $1500. I am interested in the Borbet type CA wheels that resemble the wheels on my Z3. I like that style, they look open, and easy to keep clean.
Even though we're expecting temps in the 70-80 degree range for the next week or so winter is surely on the way!!

The BBS are nice but 4-5 times more expensive than the Borbet's. With the recent market downturn lots of $$$$$$ are in the gutter, I've canceled the order for the Porsche, and will settle for a cheapo fall-winter set-up for my BMW.
