Compared to my previous Bridgestones, I feel like I'm driving a snowmobile. Not only is the traction and handling amazing, but they are extremely smooth and quiet on pavement for a winter tire (far better than my summer Dunlop RFTs).

Here's the link to the Tire Rack rating for both Performance Winter and Studless Ice & Snow tires.
Tire Rack Ratings
I got the Michelins; the Tire Rack advisor said they were a little better than Blizzaks in the dry, and almost as good in the snow. If this is true I'd hate to drive the Blizzaks in the dry. I put them on Thanksgiving day, and kind of hated them as the car seemed to wander on dry roads more than it already does. This week it started to snow, and I have to say with these tires the 545 is an absolutely fabulous winter car! Heated seats and steering wheel, and stable as can be in light snow and on ice. No, you can't defy the laws of physics, but I have no need for all wheel drive with these tires. Of course BMW's 50/50 weight distribution, along with DSC help greatly as well.

The coming weeks will tell what the car can do in deep snow, but I'm extremely impressed on ice. I recommend the Michelins.

Hmmmm... mine car tracks straight as an arrow with the Xi2's on, just like it does with the summers. Since you say your car also wanders with summers on, it seems like the problem lies elsewhere rather than with the tires. What pressure are you running? Mine are at 29F and 33R, but that's a mistake on my part with the rear, as the recommended rear pressure is 36. Even so, they're working well for me. A very comfortable and confidence inspiring tire. I planned on garaging my car for most of the winter, but I'm having so much fun in the snow and ice with it that I'm rarely driving my winter Volvo.

Starting my second winter with my Michelin X-Ice snow shoes. Once again my car is now a tank. Bring it on!

Yes, that's what I was trying to say in my wordy, indirect way. It just seems that my problem is more noticeable with the winter tires on, but it's not a tire issue in and of itself.

Continental DWS is the best tire I have ever had, winter or summer. I do a fair amount of mountain driving here in Colorado which gets pretty slick in the. In 2 years with the DWS's on my 535XI the car has never spun the tires once in snow or on ice. Also stopping or cornering have I felt them slide.
