Here in the southern U.S. we have ice..not really snow. I don't have any problem driving in snow and get by ok in ice in the right setup. But the probably is not really with your skills now is it...It's the mo's that don't have a freaking clue that it might take a bit longer to stop on ice and insist on driving at or above the posted limits. When I was a kid it was a big thing to go sit close to an intersection and watch the cars sllip and slide. The best spots were those hills that had a stop light at the bottom. Fools would slide through the intersection one after another.
For that I reason I stay at home when it starts getting bad. Plus it's a good excuse to work from home seeing as how we only get a few days a year of the beautiful icy weather.

Robert J: BTW, what kind of speeds can you manage on Inlandsv?gen/the 45 during the winter? 
Only driven it during the summer, and IMHO it's one of the better roads to drive in Sweden.

[/quote]A winter tire with spikes is of course the best thing for ice (i.e. Nokian Hakkapeliitta4, Continental or Michelin), and a 4WD will beat a RWD.
A have been driving for the last six or seven years now (320Ci, 325Ci, 525iA both E39 and E60) without spikes with Nokian Q (the new Northern version is now called Rsi) and now with Contis (see my signature).
They are not their best on blank ice but on snow they almost beat any tire.
The BMW DSC is awsome and will keep you on the road but do not forget about physics, the car will not stop nearly as good on snow or ice.
And always remember, you cannot drive your car in the winter as on the summer.

You should poll the US verses the rest of the world, we don't like putting on snow tires here.

e60 is ment to be driven. It's not rear enough to become high payed classic... Maybe after 30 years, if any are in service then.

My Ride: 2004 Titanium Gray 545i auto, navigation, premium sound/Logic7, cold weather, adaptive Xenon, Lumbar support, split rear seat, PDC.
Anything over 6" and it stays in the garage. 6" or less and it goes out with original equip Conti M+S and it handles better than my '04 Toyota AWD Sienna. My '99 540i did great too.
