This same thing just happened to me. I came out to my car after having it parked at work (secure parking lot) and there was an 8 inch crack coming from the top of the windhshield near the rear-view mirror. No noticable impact point either. The crack then grew another 4 inches or so in 1 day. I seriously think its a stress fracture since it's coming from the top of the car under the lip.

I told my dealer they better replace it and they did (under warranty).

I'm not sure but I think my dealer actually sub-contracts windshield replacements out to mobile replacement companies like glass doctor.? What's nice is that they do the replacement in the BMW shop so there are techs there to help with model specific issues, etc. but the guy with the windshield experience does the majority of the work...

niktee, it just dawned on me that we're talking about the same dealer!

Glad to see they took care of you...

I had mine replaced by the dealer. Most dealers sub it out - glass tech are very low-paid relative to BMW techs, so it usually isn't smarto to "waste" high-paid tech hours on glass repairs.

My dealer swears they do their own work, and I just wanted the dealer responsible for everything.

Funny thing is, two weeks after I got it replaced, I had another rick hit the new one, and have the same crack again. This time, I'm going to wait until the windshield gets really pitted and then replace it - that'll be a nice upgrade in a couple of years.

Same here.
Had my windshield replaced yesterday, after finding a crack at work the other day.
The dealer found a pin sized chip right on the edge, and concluded this caused the
eventual crack. I also had wind noise issues above 230km/h.
So replaced by BMW, looks like a good job, however I think I have a different
focus point on the HUD now... maybe I need it calibrated or something.
Hopfully the wind noise is gone, haven't tested that yet.

I have BMW Top Cover insurance, they have unlimited windshield replacement
clause, no problem.

Is it just my imagination, or are E60 windshields much more fragile than others? It seems there is an unusually high number of cracks and other failures.
