I was also quoted around 1200 by the dealership. The insurance will cover the crack if it is more than 12 cm, as was told to me by State Farm Representative. Also, they found a guy who would do it for 600 bucks and if i chose to do it with dealership, i would also have to pay the rest out of my pocket. Instead, I found a different place where i got the thing replaced for 250 and it is non-oem, but my rain sensors have no problem. I am happy I only payed 250 and not a ridiculous 1200!!!!!!! It all depends on the place where you get your windshield installed and how they can warantee there work.

I had the same problem 3 weeks ago. I didnt have glass protection on my insurance (farmers) so I just paid the my deductible. Insurance will try to send you to their specific provider and also ask you yo use oem windshield. Dont do that. But call them and insist that you want to use your own prefrred glass shop.

I went to the BMW recommened glass shop and owner got the BMW stock windshield from the dealer, took an authorization (for the extra $$ for rain sensor, condensation sensor, etc) from my insurance and replaced the glass. The authorization process was 15mins and the glass (with the rain sensor) etc was done in 3 hrs.

I had a stress crack on my 2004 545 when the car was only a month old and BMW replaced it; however, I am not sure if they will replace it due to a stone.
Last, I agree with everyone else on the board about making sure you get the correct windshield.

I'm currently replacing my windshield and was quoted today $795 for oem and $689 for aftermarket. I figured the car came with oem it should be replaced with oem.

If you are leasing a vehicle from BMW, this is an extra consideration. When turning in the vehicle, BMWNA may verify if the windshield is correct. If not, they could charge you for a new install even if the one you turn in is in perfect condition. I am dealing with this right now with 325i - I'm just going to turn it in cracked and let them deal with it, that way there are no surprises except for the final charge. BMWNA informed me that it must be OEM or the warranty would be void. Something extra to consider when performing windshield replacements.

As a side note, when I called a 3rd party windshield repair guy, he said he would need to order the windshield from a BMW dealership in San Antonio. The Austin dealership (only one here) was charging WAY too much for parts only. More than what BMWNA charges for complete replacement.
