Is it common to have some wind noise coming from the sun roof at speeds abouve 80mph?
My 96 Impala SS (no sun roof) was a much quieter car at those speeds. Is it something to live with or should I complain to the dealer?

I was wondering the same thing, even at 70 mph. On road trips I close the roof panel and it quiets the car down. I didn't notice this issue with my E39.

It's not normal. Usually if you hear an increased wind noise at higher speeds, something is either misaligned or not sealing properly.
It's fairly common with the panoramic roof found on the E61 (Touring) and other models. Check this out for more info:

I have had this in the past with mine and it gets gradually worse over time. (By that I mean its initially unbearable at 120+mph, then 100+mph, then 80+mph, etc etc.) After 6 months from new, the dealer had to replace the seals to sort the wind noices issue -- and this did in fact solve the wind noiseissue. Its now another 6 months later and the wind noise is once again becoming unbearable at higher speeds. The work around is to close the interior sunroof cover to reduce the noise, but that just becomes a hassle.
At the next service or winter-wheel tyre change, I will most likely ask them to replace the seals again.
Deano -- I too suggest you do the same with your dealer.

I too had this problem. I asked my dealer to replace the seals, but they were able to correct it by simply adjusting the sunroof. The mechaninc said the seals were still within specifications. It worked, so I am fine with their less expensive solution.

Mine started to make the noise above about 60 mph after it was in the dealer to rectify the issue that it had jammed in the open position!
Unfortunately I dont have the time to take it back, so I guess I'll have to put up with it until next service.

If you need a cheap fix before going to the dealer, try the old athletic tape trick. You simply apply black athletic tape to the edges of the glass. That took (temporarily) care of my wind noise. I will have the dealer look at it during next routine service (with the tape removed).
