Well it's been awhile since I've posted here, a great forum still. Thanks everyone for all the great info!!
The release info on the new 3er coupe with the inline 6 twin turbo already has many people speculating that this power plant will migrate into the e60 platform at some point. That sure sounds like a beautiful combo to me! I always thought the e46 M3 inline 6 would have been great in the 5er body/platform.
However I remember seeing a page of model designations for the e60 platform listing a 560 nomenclature.
What do you think that car would be? Assuming that the e60 V8 would get one more "bump" in the horsepower rating for the current bodystyle run....I am inclined to think the e60 V8 would aquire direct injection, and the twin turbo set-up, upping the HP of this engine to 390-400HP, with about the same torque number.....this would allow BMW to leapfrog Mercedes' new 380HP V8 in the E-class and give the BMW a 560 designation and a "new" powerplant that would be used in the last 2 years of the e60 and make it's way to the next designation "F" platform 5er. As well as winding up in a 760, & 660.
Anybody else thinking along these lines about future development? Just kinda curious.
Vinman.

BMWs BOD have directed R&D into the TT (twin turbo) and DI (Direct Injection) into its V8 and V10 lineup. Good increases in HP with marginal increase in fuel consumption and get to keep weight down compared to what they would have to do for same HP in NA engine. I think we are in for some fun times in about 2-3 years with some more turbos.

Considering the weight of the current V8, I think adding twin turbos to the car would make the front too heavy; thus, worsening the handling aspects of the car. What I think BMW will do is remap the engine a little to give some extra horses.

I am somewhat new to performance handling and the like. I wonder if adding some more weight (say 100 lbs) to the current 530 would change the driving characteristics? 100lbs does not sound like a lot. Can someone explain why it would make a noticeable difference?
Along the same lines, do you think if I have another passenger in my car who wieghs > 100 lbs, would it increase the 0-60 time?

One of the most important aspects in terms of how a car handles is balance. The most ideal case is close to 50:50 weight distribution between the front and the rear. Adding 100 lbs to the engine bay would greatly disturb the balance and make the car front heavy; thus, dreasing its handling capabilities. The handling of RWD cars are usually better than FWD mostly because of this fact.

Yes, it would take slightly longer to get to 60 mph with extra passengers in the car.

Highly doubtful. Even if it can be retrofitted, it will not come at a small cost. Normal turbo upgrades usually cost $4-8K, sometimes even more. So in this case, you are gonna be better off getting a new car.

If they are working on a turbo V8, I hope it is can be retrofit to the old V8 valvetronic. At that, I will upgrade for a small cost.
