They need to get rid of 540i first.

The 540i is already gone according to some sources...although it still appears available on the BMW website. The 540i is a total waste of time. Nobody in their right mind would order that when the 535d is available, and from the looks of it , I don't think anyone did.

A 535i, priced correctly, would be a killer seller in Europe. My guess is if they are going to release it for the e60, it will probably be within the next 12 months...any time after that most people would wait for the F10.

For you Europeans, how would you rationalize a 535i vs a 535d? Why would you want one?

Both could be remapped to gain significantly more power. I think the 535i may has the upper hand in hp, but the 535d in torque. From performance figures of modded 335i's, it seems the 535i may be faster than the 535d, but then there's the issue of fuel economy.

How are the diesel models priced compared to their petrol counterparts?

It varies from territory to territory.

In UK "like for like" (if you can make direct comparisons), diesel cars are more expensive to buy.

Price isnt the reason as there is very little in it - BMW 335i M Sport Auto - ?35690, 335d M Sport Auto - ?36125, so thats just ?500 of a premium. Negligable really when you are spending this amount.

People chose the 335d for economy, residuals and lots of low down torque. People chose the 335i for the way the car sounds, the way it delivers its power and because they dont want a diesel i guess.

I have a remapped LCI 535d. I wouldnt have considered a 540i, but i *might* consider a 535i next time if one exists.

I dont think thats how the majority of people purchase their 5 series. the vast bulk of people buy on a residual deal or are company cars, therefore come 2008 if a 535i doesnt exist, those people at the end of their personal contracts or company leases will buy from the engine choices that are there at the time - it being some 2 years at that point until the f10 arrives - or nearer 3 for the m sport...

IMHO those who choose to care don't enter into a 3 or 4 year lease deal knowing that an entirely new model is to be launched during that period. Especially early into that period.

That's a time to try another type of car entirely then come back to the marque/model if so driven.

Personally, I'd be very interested in the 535i. I can't quite understand why BMW offer the bigger 'i' engines here but limit the 535i to the USA. Seems nonsensical to me.

Edit: Oops, sorry for resurrecting this old thread, just came across in by accident via Google!
