I remember reading somewhere that the rims for RFT are different from the normal Non RFT. I believe the gap between the rim & tire is much less - or something along thi line

I was wondering if this would be a hinderance in fitting normal tires later on, or if it will in anyway cause a tire damage.

Also, what about the sensors for the TPMS, will they fit OK.

Normal non RFT tyres will fit without any problems.

There are no problems with regular tires running on your stock E60 rims.

Just pull your sensors out when you replace your RFT's and reinsert with your new tires. It's that simple.

I have deliberately bought non-RFT Bridgestone Potenza's RE050 (245/40/18 and 275/35/18) onto style 124 rims, because RFT's would in my opinion destroy the suspesion in 2-3 years due to the rubber hardness.
It is probably a good business for BMW having suspension repairs once warranty is out.

There are no sensors on the EU E60 wheels.

You can install RF (Run Flat) or non RF tyres on any BMW OEM (standard) wheel.

The RF tyres are harder, but they will not destroy the suspension.

You can never have too many confirmations.

So how does the TPMS work in the EU?

EU and other markets use the ABS sensors. Any real difference in the wheel revolutions (from opposite corners I think) causes the puncture alarm to activate. This is why it takes a while to initialise after changing tyre presures, as the car has to learn a "normal" tyre rotation. This is also why the puncture alarm doesn't (shouldn't!) activate until about 30% of tyre pressure is lost so there would be a significant difference in effective tyre diameter due to deflation. Simple, cheap, no extra sensors to buy, replace or have seperate batteries for, just a little extra software!

I suppose strictly speaking, it's not a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, it is a Tyre Rotation Monitoring System!
