just curious
the new X5 and e60 LCI models will have the new gear shifter... can we install into our current cars as retrofit?
kind of cool to have one....
by the way, I still don't get the push button feature... if we have to still plug the key, why have that extra push button thing? maybe for arthritic patients? just a thought...

cheers everyone!!

The new one communicates mode selection etc. to the transmission using electronics (drive-by-wire).
Based on this, it would be difficult and expensive (if it is even possible) to graft the new selector (as is) onto the current transmission.

lol true.

i'm sure there'll be some way to just attach the new shifter to an old e60.

...the question is why? i've checked out the shifter in person and its fugly!

don't wine: go back to your Alfa (i'm pretty sure you don't want to, and I'm absolutely sure it will have returned to dust by now...)

Everything is possible. But this one is so tough, it'd be easier to buy a new E60.

I checked underneath of the car and at least in my 11/03 car, gearshift selector is mechanically (=steel cable) connected to the gearbox. So it would need a somekind of stepper motor or such to drive the gearbox functions; forget it..

With an autobox, the only thing you should consider retrofitting is the paddle shifters as some members have done.

I wish we could get a CIP update so we could get faster shift points like the ones expected on the new sports auto transmission.
