I didn't realise the ECU was also coded no wonder dealers want to spend hours updating the car if using ISTA. Hopefully you would think it would back up your settings but doubt it would back up the engine management ecu as it would expect it to remain stock?

may not be helpful to jas_r_1 (sorry) but, I'm guessing if you go the remap route the safest way now would be to get a switch-able device that will allow you to reload the remap once you've had your service updates?

not sure why they have gone this route, when they used progman it only updated what was needed and you could add any coding you wanted

probably less labour intensive to have it update the entire car, with all known fixes at once rather then on a piece meal basis... but if they have to do this for even small things I can see this being very annoying... but least they can keep there labour rates for the job high

Jas - It may be worth you contacting the person who did your remap (assuming you have already got one ) and ask where you stand if the new method for bmw updates is a complete rewrite of the software. They may offer to flash the map back (hopefully free) or may even be able to code the mp3 facility depending on their equipment?

This is where you really need to find an after market company who use an alternative system to BMW's own. They can then target the update to the module in question rather than a Microsoft Service Pack type update that BMW provides.

Thanks for all the replies so far - I don't really need MP3 as I hook up my iPhone to aux input but I figured I could get it done for free before the warranty runs out in two months, and it would be handy to have in case I want to retrofit Dension later on. Looks i'll speak to the Jason at B&W chiptune, who originally remapped the car, to see what the options are.
