Yes. New Lexus GS. You can watch DVD right from stock w/o mod, but shift selector has to be in "Park".

all you have to do is cut the wire connected to the ebrake and ground it somewhere else! simple DIY!

My Ride: 2005 525i Titanium Silver Metalic and 2003 325xi Jet Black with the Premium Package in both cars.
Interesting in theory, but I'm not sure US regs would allow that. The highways of the US are so badly crowded with cars, thats all we need is people who are driving also looking at a DVD.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
All this speculation on a car whose Welcome screen is written by Counsel's Office? You guys know better when it comes to "safety."

Its funny when you go to other countries and taxi drivers are watching movies or cartoons (even porn!) when they're driving you around.
This US regulation that allows you to watch video only while parked really blows. I'm sure its all about liability too, to prevent lawsuits if someone crashes and tries to blame the video. Common sense will tell you to only look at it when you're stopped at a red light and look at the road again when you start moving.
When automakers first decided to install radios in cars, was there a regulation that said drivers can only listen to the radio when the car is parked?

My Ride: E61 530D M SPORT - Silver
All new mercedes fitted with the new command system play DVD's without any modification, obviously you need to be in park mode to view the screen. But even when you drive off the movie still keeps playing and you can hear the audio the screen just displays a warning message.
I cant beleive it is that difficult for BMW to fix???????

I think it shouldn't be that hard... especially because when we use the DVD drive for movies, we would not be using Navigation at all... thus there should be enough buffering to play DVDs... it is mostly software related... just like Windows CE... if they are able to have movie clips play on PDAs with Windows CE, then why wouldn't our BMW I-drives?

My Ride: 525d E60 Fleet Edition
DVDs are encoded with MPEG2! This is very demanding on the hardware and nowhere comparable to decoding MP3 audio files. The only thing I think would be possible with the current hardware could be VCDs which are encoded using MPEG1.
