A manual in a BMW transforms the car. In a straight line you'll hardly notice the difference but when it gets twisty you''ll notice the difference. You always have the right gear. I don't buy the argument that a manual is harder to drive in traffic. It's just with the manual you can't be lazy. Every Steptronic vehicle I drive is always in Sport mode and in traffic it's 2nd gear in manual mode. Not much different than a true manual.

I've driven BMW manuals all my adult life. I would have said the same thing until I drove the 550i with the sport automatic and paddles. I don't say that now.

Have you driven a Sport Automatic Transmission?

I guess that's why the formula one cars have paddle shitters, because it's lame and not as good as a manual shift.

Yeah, I've had all 3 tranny's offered in the E60, and I enjoyed the SMG most. Of course, it WAS attached to an M5!

I don't think the argument is that it's "harder"...just that it is much more of a pain in the ass. Say your stuck in stop-n-go wreck traffic. Clearly an automatic work better in that situation than a manual.

Its great that BMW offers the Step, SA and 6speed. Of the three, the SA extracts the most performance out of the 535 whether your drag racing or on a road course. My ultimate choice would be the new double clutch SMG, hopefully it makes it into the F10.

I love my 6sp manual and will never get an auto again. When I odered my car from the dealer I was the first to request a manual so when I went back for my inspection a year later I was still the only one that had bought an E60 in stick, according to my SA
