Anybody know the logic for waiting until 11 mph of forward speed before the doors automatically lock (an iDrive option)? If locking the doors is for security or even safety, why not lock down as soon as any gear or drive is engaged? IMO, Lincoln is far ahead of BMW in practicality of options, and not just this one. My wife's Lincoln locks the doors as soon as the car is in Drive. At 11 mph, I am usually shifting to second gear in the alley ways and parking lots.

For some reason the Germans have selected 11 mph as the magic moment. There must be a reason. I'll bet Ice knows.
Probably the same reason the godawful "ice warning" goes off at 37 degrees. However, it does seem like my doors lock almost as soon as I start rolling.

If I was driving a 545 w/SMG, I think I'd usually be up to 11 mph about 10 feet from my starting spot.

That's great for stopping -- no complaints. But, on entry, I always lock manually before I crank on parking lots, since BMW is not going to do it for me unless I build speed. If I get engrossed in something before I drive off, I don't have to be concerned about an unwelcomed entry.

Two words. Car Wash
Hardly, most of us don't use a car wash.

Thats quite endearing, however "we" are in the minority as many non-E60.net members use a car wash and use regular gas.

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking that if you were just going to move the car a short distance (before getting back out) you may not need the car to lock. (Or maybe they figure 11mph gives the kids a chance to still jump in if you've started to drive off before they've fully entered? )

All I know is that our old Chrysler Town & Country locked at around 15mph too so there must be some reason for it. I can't remember when the Honda Odyssey locks them -- I'll try to remember to look soon.

My '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee also automatically locked doors at around 10-15mph.

Jim, there is a reason.
At 11mph or around 20km/h, certain safety related features on the car become "active" - i think ABS, DSC, airbags etc.
I guess BMW found it easy to tie in the lockup feature to this infrastructure....
have you noticed eg. the PDC monitor goes off either after 50m or accelerating through, yep, 20km/h, which ever is first....it's a magic figure. It was explained to me by a mechanic when I had my 328i, but I only remember the concept, not the details.

Thanks, Andre. At least there is a little logic there. Problem is, they tied it into the safety issues of the crash system rather than the security issues we can face on the street. I guess I'll just continue to lock manually. Sigh.
