Why not sooner than 11 mph?

Anybody know the logic for waiting until 11 mph of forward speed before the doors automatically lock (an iDrive option)? If locking the doors is for security or even safety, why not lock down as soon as any gear or drive is engaged? IMO, Lincoln is far ahead of BMW in practicality of options, and not just this one. My wife's Lincoln locks the doors as soon as the car is in Drive. At 11 mph, I am usually shifting to second gear in the alley ways and parking lots.
For some reason the Germans have selected 11 mph as the magic moment. There must be a reason. I'll bet Ice knows.

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking that if you were just going to move the car a short distance (before getting back out) you may not need the car to lock. (Or maybe they figure 11mph gives the kids a chance to still jump in if you've started to drive off before they've fully entered? )
All I know is that our old Chrysler Town & Country locked at around 15mph too so there must be some reason for it. I can't remember when the Honda Odyssey locks them -- I'll try to remember to look soon.

I think its so that you can drive out of the garage or parking space to where your passengers are waiting... that way you dont have to unlock the car again when you reach them.
a Camry i had before locked INSTANTLY after you start the ignition and unlocks when you stop it I HATED that!
BMWs is perfect for me. lock at 12mph and doesnt unlock when i shut off the enging. I like to unlock the door WHEN I'm ready to get out.

I wonder how long it will take for BMW to get sued when a successful carjacking takes place inside a school zone because the driver is a law abiding citizen?

Hi, Rudy. Good point, but BMW's defense would undoubtedly say that the driver had the option to lock the door with the central locking system.

Yeah, but some slick attorney would argue that the "customer" was accostomed to the automatic locking and never had to accept any type of agreement that the doors would not lock until after 11mph, etc.
