Hi Merv,
since I've been reading some of the other threads, I also have an idea where this question comes from.
Sitting in Amsterdam Schiphol lounge yesterday, I read an article in a dutch car magazine called 'Carros'. The article is called 'Two of a kind' and it compares the 535d with the M5...
Unfortunately (for you, unless you speak dutch, have a dutch wife or mistress or are planning to get one ), it's in dutch. I am not sure there's a translation available.
I will post it on a dutch thread (called 'nederlandstalig draadje') on this forum when I get back from my business trip (some time early next week probably).
I will perhaps translate some of it, since it is a long article.
To give you a bit of a taste...there's one part where they mention that they are taking the 2 cars to the racetrack. They say it is an unfair battle since the M5 has 235 HP more than the 535d. But...the 535d has got 40 Nm more torque than the M5 and this max power occurs 4100 rpm sooner than with the M5. You must be drooling...
Then they say 'this is the essence of this story, because the 535d accelerates quite comfortably with the M5. It's only at 150 km/h that the latter one really leaves the 535d behind.'
They are comparing the M5 to a 4cyl Suzuki GSX-R 1000 superbike and the 535d to a 1450cc Harley Davidson V-Twin, Screaming Eagle version , which already at extremely low rpm, produces a 'tsunami wave like' torque and acceleration power.
I got perhaps a bit creative on part of the translation, but the 535d really gets outstanding scores in this article.
That's it for now. Gotta put my suit on and do some work.
That's good to know. No use me posting the article then.
At 7.30 am on a Sunday morning, sitting in an airport lounge with another 20 hours of travel ahead of me, it was the easiest literature for me to digest. But you're right, it was not really factual (maybe it does not always have to be factual...).
Just thought that Merv could have found it inspiring.
