I bought the extended warranty (6 yrs, 100K miles). Will likely keep it for 6 yrs, then perhaps buy a new 5 series. What will it be, an F20??? (I hear the E-system will be retired, and F will be preceding the numbers)

At first, I thought I'd trade in when it reach 49K miles, but I think I need to change my mind again. There are few reasons:
1. So far, the car is quite reliable, and my brother-in-law has a few mechanic shops . In term of maintenance, I can use his shop and do oil change and other things when lift is needed.
2. It'd cost me $45K to trade in for 550i. I'm not going to do it unless someone give me some suggestion. My car is already paid off.
3. I had a chance to drive 545i for a day, and I found the power is not worth it.
4. I've had M5 SMG Paddle Shift retrofitted and upgraded sound system. They make me a happy camper.
5. 225hp is enough for now if I don't care about gas mileage. To utilize all those 225hp while in gear, rev up to 4500rpm until I feel the car lurge a little bit, and then I slightly easy out and quickly (quickly is the key here) stomp/floor the gas pedal. This will make ECU quickly add more fuel to the engine. This method will make the car quickly moving forward, and I can feel a lot fun torque This is more than enough for where I live (San Jose, California USA). Of course, I must use this with M5 SMG Paddle Shifters. . Not in D or DS mode because the upshift too early.

I will probably trade my 545i for the new E92 335 couple or E92 M3.

I agree with the others on this thread that intend to get their money's worth out of their cars by keeping them a long time. I believe that if you keep a BMW well maintained, you will be rewarded with reliability. It would take a fairly big repair bill to convince me it is more economical to trade up every few years.

One thing I will add is that if my M3 did not have a CPO warrantee, it would have cost me well over $5,000 in repairs for the 25,000 or so miles that I owned it past 50K. As it was, I paid $1300 for #2 inspection and $300 for them to diagnose and fix a plugged drain hole in the boot area. The dead giveaway that it needed to be repaired was the sloshing sound I heard when I was cornering and the 6" of water I had in my passenger side rear well. I also needed front brakes ($600) and rear brakes ($900) as well as a $700 oxygen sensor. Not cheap.

Will definitely play it by ear, but so far, after 2 1/2 years of trouble free ownership, I'm leaning toward keeping beyond the warranty. But I've got 1 1/2 years to change my mind if things start acting up...

That's BMW dealer charge you. It's too expensive there. For me, all those labor charge are mostly free

My bro-in-law always do it for me no charge. He was so nice that he never charge me for smog check or oil change for all cars I've owned. I gave him the key and he takes care of the rest.
