My beloved 545i goes back when the lease is up....@60K miles, 10k after warranty ends. Hoping for good luck during that 10K and you bet I'll have a once over twice at about 49K.

One of the things that I find fearsome is owning a car that is as technologically advanced as ours once it is out of warrantee. I have no idea what a software update or a reprogramming must cost, never mind a clutch or blown motor. I'm sure it's a fortune. What about you guys?? Anyone out of warrantee?? And for those of you who aren't, what are you planning to do??
I purchase my cars and drive them, more or less, to the end of trustworthy life and/or $10k value. My E-39 was traded at 100k, others as high as 150K. According to the financial wizards that's the only way to get your money's worth from these expensive rides. But what usually pushes me to move is finding a desirable replacement and market value of my old one.

I'm keeping it. The cost of future problems after the warranty expires is reflected in the resale value. You've already made the decision when you bought the car because it starts to depreciate in value right away. The question is how quickly it depreciates, which is largely a function of quality. Junky cars have low residual values (think Dodge). Even guys who lease pay the price for a low residual by paying higher monthly payments than the exact same car with a higher residual.

For me, there are a lot of factors that will go into this decision.

1. How much the car has been relatively problem free during the period.
2. Typical cost of maintaining the car post expiration of BMW maintainence (or warranty) based on prior history. Obviously this is very much dependant on how much you have abused the car and your driving style.
3. Cost of purchasing additional maintenance coverage.
4. Cost savings of BMW maintenance under warranty.

I generally like to keep my cars for a long time (our other two cars are 12 and 14 years old), and would like to do the same for this too. That's also why I purchased rather than leased.

So what would I do??? One word answer - "Depends"

Honestly, it's too soon for me to decide.

I agree totally. Another sensible Chicago driver!

I will plan to keep it, as long as it's doing fine. I bought it outright, so as long as I can go without a car payment, I will. When I start to get worried because the car is acting badly, I will see what cars interest me at that point. I'm hoping it's 10 years. Or maybe I'll just get insanely curious once the next 5 generation is introduced.
