There is a secret temp indicator hidden in the instrument clusters hidden menu. It's for service use but you can use it too and it shows a lot of other useful things too.

That's correct. An engine under no load (at idle) takes a very long time to warm the oil up to full operating temp. During that time the engine is running rich causing excessive fuel dilution to the oil, pollution, etc. and not to mention the transmission/diff need to warm by driving also.
Pull out of your drive. Do a 0 to 6o and shes warmed up!

great! so only m5's are real bmws!

(actually, i think the real reason why they put it back in the m5 is because the mpg meter would look very depressing in the m5)

Actually, it's an OIL TEMPERATURE guage that the M5 has, not a coolant temperature gauge.

Press the reset odo button until the hidden menu shows up (before a warning triangle will show up) then you'll see FGSTNR write down the numbers there and sum the numbers (that's your code to unlock the menu) then by pressing reset button simply come to menu 19 and enter that code. After you can explore the menus engine temp (KHL WSSR TEMP or something like that means K?hlwasser Temp Coolingwater Temp) is on menu 7 if I remember correctly and don't forget there are sub menus. 07.03 exp.

I dont like the MPG guage... its depressing to look at in any car. It'll make me want to keep it on the right more no matter what car with the gas prices now. I think its a useless feature. I much rather have a Temp Guage... Oil Temp guage to be exact.
