My Ride: 2008 535i

Hello all,
I wanted to share my most recent engine malfunction experience. Not so much to look for answers but to put the information out there since the conditions leading into the issue were different than most of the other posts i have read.
2008 535i with 62k miles, HPFP have already been replaced by dealer. The first indication of engine problems was a slight hesitation and vibration when accelerating. I initially thought i just lost traction. Over the next mile the engine began to shake violently like as if i were holding on to a jack hammer. At this point my idrive indicated all systems were ok. I quickly pulled over and shut the car off. After looking under the hood for any obvious problems i started the engine and the vibrating had become even worse. At this point i received the dreaded "Engine malfunction - reduced power" alert. Car was towed to BMW and im waiting to hear back from my service advisor. My intial thought is that this is a HPFP issue however since they were already replaced im leaning towards faulty fuel injectors. In any case i just wanted to share this and will post an update as soon as i have one.

i feel for you EPI. when i was debating whether or not to pull the trigger on my car, i had a hard time deciding because i didn't want to get stuck with a problem car after reading all the posts about bmw. i bought it anyway, but always on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary while driving it. i shouldn't have to worry about it malfunctioning on me while driving, but i do. eventhough it only has 45M on it, i still do.
i hope the dealer is able to fix what's wrong with your ride and make sure to post their findings.

Your symptoms sound like what people describe as HPFP or the same thing I experienced when I had a bad fuel injector recently. You didn't by any chance smell gasoline in the cabin did you?

I also had a similar problem and was hoping it was the fuel pump... The pump was replaces the other year and I was having a problem that seemed to be the same. CE showed several fuel codes. At the end of the day, it was the low pressure fuel sensor. Part is around 90.00 and three hours labor. So 400.00 later the car was back to normal. This and the HPFP is sthe only fuel problem that I have had.

Gotcha but it was a fuel injector, so interesting I guess. They couldn't explain to me why it happened. Thank goodness for the warranty.

Yeah its amazing how one faield fuel injector can make our cars crap out like that. Then again its probably for saftey reasons why the car goes into limp mode/reduced power when something like that happens.
