Car is a 2007 550i with Active Steering. I've noticed that when I start the car in the morning pull out of my parking spot, the first turn of the wheel results in a 'clunk' sound. Is this normal? It sort of reminds me of some an ABS test that some cars do before they get going.
Anyone else having this sound or is it time for the dealer? Overall the car rides/handles like a dream.

i have that too. the guy at the dealer said it's a break pads clicking into position inside the caliber.. not sure if it's true though.
but I wouldn't worry about it

Me too. It feels like the infamous steering wheel clunk just in reverse.
I had the knock in the steering but my dealer replaced my steering shaft so now it's gone but I still get the clunk in the morning when reversing.
It never happens later, only in the morning. Maybe it's something to do with the steering fluid being cold or something?

Same thing here
I experienced a similar clunk sound from the steering on my 535d, After going to the dealer and speaking to the technician he explained that on some e60's when manufctured the grease used to lubricate the splines on the steering column had been found to be incifficent and BMW had issued a memo to dealers advising that this would result in a clunking sound. The first fix is to re-lubricate which stops the splines moving and should stop the noise. I had this done but after 6 months it returned. The second fix is to install a collar on the steering column which in turn stops any movement of the splines. Since having a collar installed i've had no problems, all done under warranty to.
