You're right - they both look great. I wasn't aware of how good the e39 interior really was.... (I never owned one!)
When I see an E39 that someone obviously looks after, I still think it is a great looking car. The thing that I find most dated is the interior and esp. the electronics.
I agree the E39 interior was excellent, and really driver orientated. Something I think is lacking in the E60

They both still look good.

Your right, that one looks real good - M5 I guess. The plain jane E39 looks dated to me as does the way the computer/radio etc. display data as a bunch of orange LED dots.

When I bought my 3 series back in 2001 I was told then that the bmw body style changes every six years. The e46 body style change was first available in 1999/2000 (as 323 and 328) and then 2001 (as 325 and 330). The new 3 series (e90) is due this year. The e39 followed a similar time frame of 1997-2003.
If this holds true then we will probably see a new 5 series body style in 2009/2010.
A facelift (minor mods to the exterior) usually come 2-3 years before the end of the series.

body style change and face lift are two different things.? i don't think e60 will change the body style in seven years but probably will do some face lifts in a year or two.? please correct me if i'm wrong.

I was told by my BMW dealer that the 2006 545 will have revised tail lights with a trunk lid third brake light instead of the light in the rear window. For some reason I don't believe they will trash the rear window brake light. I was looking on line for any information confirming the change when I came across this post. I read somewhere that the 745 headlights were going to be revised and my dealer confirmed this. I got the feeling he was just agreeing with me not wanting to admit he did not know. Has anyone heard of these proposed changes?
Yes, my dealer said brake lights on the trunk lid like the 745. I had to look up a picture of a 745 to see what he was talking about and there are actually two lights on the trunk lid plus a rear window brake light mounted lower than the 545. I don't think the trunk lid lights on the 745 are brake lights. The guy probably does not know what is talking about. There was a post by E60525d that list many changes for week 9 production. The forum title is "E60 changes." E60525d did not mention the brake and tail light changes, although week 9 as referenced would be a 2005 model and not 2006. I hope the changes he/she mentioned are for the US bound model as I will surely have to get the optional 19" wheels.
