You think you have it bad: You should have endured the fine-gauge British wire wheel splines. I saw a Jag mechanic loosen E-type knock offs and do donuts in the parking lot for 15 minutes before the roughly 3 inch deep splines finally worked themselves loose. I began using grease on mine post-haste after that.

That was rust; today, I believe it is opposing-metal interaction.

I still recon its down to using the acid based wheel cleaners. My x5 is perfect and all those wheels ever get is tender care from a maguires NXT car wash. I recently looked at an x5 which was a younger vintage than mine at a local dealer and the rust on the brake calipers and hubs was terrible.

Unfortunately i don't have a jack with my E91 or id take the wheels off and have a look for you to see if its a common problem.

Thumbs up

Someone posted a while ago that to get your rusted wheels free from the hub lossen all the studs a few turns and roll your car back and forth slowly and your wheels will break free from the hubs. Anybody try this method and how did it work?
cheers

NO The post didn't say anything about turning the front wheels from stop to stop. It said moving the car back and forth.
cheers

Very common if not the rule in countries/location with winter.

I just visted my local BMW Service where the guys was changing car wheels (from winter to summer).

All the service guys used a rubber hammer on the wheels to get them off.

My car gets the same treatment every time.

Call me crazy but has anyone else noticed a newer design hub that looks as if it's made from aluminum?

Take a look at this old thread:
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=1935

My hubs used to look like the ones pictured but I today I finally got around to taking off my snow tires and I noticed that not only are my hubs not rusted anymore, they look as if they're made of anodized aluminum. They were very shiny where the wheel meets the hub and the winter wheels literally popped right off!

I had new brakes and rotors put on in January so maybe that's when they installed the newer part?

Am I crazy or has anyone else noticed a difference??
The newer e60s must have different hubs. Yes Rudy, the hub is part of the rotor, so if you had new rotors installed that's what you're seeing. They must have upgraded the materials and you're now reaping the benefits.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking but I'm looking to see if others have seen anything similar. The other night I looked again and it looks like the aluminum hub is clearly on the front but I'm not sure about the rear anymore. I'm not going to bother removing the wheels, etc. to get a closer look, I'm hoping someone else will confirm things...
