Offset is the biggest thing you need to worry about, somewhere in the ET 40 range. lowering is definitely recommended when upsizing your wheels because you will probably be sitting up a little higher and with xi's we already sit up pretty high but I got 20's no sport package and it doesnt look that bad, but I am definitely planning on lowering it. here is a pic with 20's no sport package and no lowering (non staggered)

There is no benefit to an Xi unless you need the extra ground clearance or need a quick start on hills. RWD with winter tires is just as good in 99% of normal winter driving.

100:1 against an Xi.
-1 NO WAY. I had a 530i for 6 months. Traded it in in January of this year. AWD is night and day over RWD with snow tires. I drove 2 330i's with snow tires for 6 years in Chicago winters. Is it possible? Yes. Can you compare it to AWD? Absolutly not.

I disagree completely - I lived in Iowa with a '99 528i. I had 16" Dunlop WinterSport M3's and could not get up the hill into my neighborhood when it had 4" of fresh snow (no one else had preceded me up the hill - I was making fresh tracks). I even tried it with a 40 mph head start. No go. Traction control on/off/whatever. That's when I got the 530xi. Lest you think I was climbing a mountain, remember the location: Iowa. The hill descent control came in darn handy going down that same hill in the ice. Now I live in Alabama and really wish that someone would buy my 530xi (anyone interested can check the classifieds).

I've driven a BMW for 7 winters in the Northeast in all types of conditions. I've never needed AWD. My first BMW was a MY 2002 330i. BMW improved the traction control system in 2002. My 535i traction control is much better than my E46 or E90 were.

My driveway is uphill. If the weather is wintry, AWD is in the garage, FWD has a chance, RWD stays at the bottom of the hill. Been there.

I was looking for wheels for my 535xi and was wondering what is the thing that I need to look for when ordering wheels from Modbargains, tirerack, etc.? Is it spacers/spacing? I think I remember hearing I had to choose specific wheels made with special dimensions and that most probably I would have a smaller selection to choose from as a result.

Also, I guess it's kinda related, but I don't know "Type" wheels I have. It's a 2008 xi with cold weather but no sport package. If I remember correctly, the center is slightly indented in a pentagonal shape. Any idea?
I have a 2008 535xi. Got wheels and tires from tire rack (Gary) last fall. Winter was a bit sloppy, but driving was uneventful.

Just enter your car information. I called Tire rack the first time to double-check. No problems.

Any rims I can get that look like this guy's? I guess I got stock 17" but clearly he has an "i" model. Damn.

All the xi wheels I've seen so far are ugly or look no different than the ones I have now.

That particular one maybe not as you already know it's seems to be 'i' model specific.

But if you think xi members that post pics on http://forums.e60.net/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=813861 (pay attention on the subject too) thread are ugly or look no different than the one you have now then I don't know what to say.
