It's what I was always told with my A4 Quattro. Maybe it's a myth, but when I was putting 19's on it everyone said stay away, something about potential damage to the transfer case. Perhaps technology has evolved since then, good news!
Take my current car for example... I'm running 255/40/19's at all 4 corners with my Blizzak LM-22's on my stock, 166 wheels. Come summer, I have my 20" wheels that are of course, staggered (255 & 285). If you are going to run 2 sets of wheels/tires for the various seasons, then running staggered on the E60xi is fine for summer and dry conditions. If you live in a place that has snow, then getting a second set for winter (with the same width for all four), is ideal.
You just need to get a wheel that has a high offset. The best wheels to look at, if you are an E60xi owner, are the 3 series wheels (E46 or E90). And when I say 3 series wheels, I'm talking about the standard, RWD 3 series wheel (not the 3 series XI wheels ). The standard, 3 series, RWD wheels have high offsets (ET 35+).
Here's another tool to use, for calculating offsets:
http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
And here are all the wheels for the 535xi made by BMW. If you click on each wheel, you will find the exact specs (width and offset). The standard offset on the E60xi is ET43.

Unless of course, you run the 124's, which are staggered and made for the E60xi. Those rears are ET55 with a 9" width, while the front is ET43 and a 8" width.

Note the BMW OEM specs on the 124 wheel which is made SPECIFICALLY for the 535xi. This is a staggered set-up that BMW designed for the XI only. These offsets will not work on a RWD model.

I think you are wise to make the switch. All those bolts and wheel shape just don't do the car justice IMHO.

Now that is a lot of brass air fittings http://www.liangdianup.com/subpages/airfitting_1.htm there is just about every type
of air fitting that you could want. Wholesale prices too. I guess these could be used as small water pipe fitting also. I
used some of the parts to make my babington wvo burner.
