It's not much, but enough to be irritating. If I keep the wheel straight the car is moving to the right. I noticed it today, a week after they've changed to summer tires and updated the CIP to 16.2. I have AS. Is there anything I can do myself; or do I have to bring the car to the dealer?

cheers,

The process to fix it is simple but unfortunately, it has to be done by the dealer. They need to re-initialize the Active Steering...

Can you re-initialize the active steering by removing the fuse and then replacing it? The owners manual says something about starting the car and turning the wheel on the way to the left and then back to center to initialize active steering.

Big Negative. Infact if you disconnect the battery and power to the AS module is lost, the module needs to be reinitialised by the dealer. As a safety measure a pin locks the steering to a fixed ratio. You can try that only if you want to drive without AS until the dealer reinitializes it. This process also sets the steering angle.

Yep, I know of nothing in the owner's manual that talks about re-initializing the AS. As far as I know, only the dealer can do it. I do know that it's something that is done pretty routinely when certain tasks are performed on the car and it's a fairly easy procedure, the car just has to be connected to the test equipment, etc.

mflauer is absolutely right.
Does the car drive straight with the steering off a nothch or two?? If so then the AS needs adjusting.
If it pulls on way or another, first check your tire pressure. If it is even let and right then you need wheel alignment.

Initializing system
1. Start the engine.
2. With the vehicle stationary, turn the steering
wheel from the straight-ahead position
to the left as far as it will go and then back to
the straight-ahead position.
3. Switch off the engine.
When you start the engine again, all the functions
of the active steering are available once
again.

This is what I got from the 2005 530i manual - Rudy any ideas when it would need to be initialized?

Edit - just found my own answer. From the owners manual -

Power failure
After a temporary power loss, the functioning of
some equipment may be limited and require
reinitialization. Individual settings are also lost
and must be updated again:
> Active steering
The system is deactivated and must be initialized,
refer to page 81. Until then, the
steering will react differently than usual.

Cool. So let us know if it fixed it. For sure you will need a trip to the dealer if you cut the power to the module in any way.
