So I have a problem with my front passenger side wheel, whenever I turn my wheel to the right or when I'm at cruising at low speed, let's say 10-20 mph, I would hear this creeking noise coming out the wheel well. So one day it got really annoying and I decided to bring it to a mechanic to get it checked out, he said the reason why I'm hearing this is because my tie rod needs replacing, now I'm wondering, how does he know that? He didn't take the wheel off or go underneath the car to check, all he did was reach his hand in there and told me to turn the wheel. Does this make sense to you guys? I just don't want to replace something that won't cure the problem and how much are tie rods? He quoted me 150$ for the tie rod and 50$ for the labor. Has anyone experience this problem or ever changed out their tie rods? Any info would help. TIA

Tie rod is a likely cause. If the mechanic felt play in the rod it needs to be replaced and can be dangerous if it lets go. Picture a front wheel pointing a different direction than intended. Mom lost a tie rod on a Buick years ago. Right front wheel was pointing hard right, left wheel pointing straight. Luckily she was only doing 20 MPH.

$200 is cheap money to fix our cars...
