I was getting a distinctive whining noise in the cabin starting at around 35-40 mph. At first I thought it could be a bad tire (Goodyear Eagle RSA's w/ 55,000 miles on them) but there was no type of vibration in the steering wheel. I took the car into the dealer and it was diagnosed as a bad left rear wheel bearing. $500.00 later the problem is fixed. Forty dollar part the rest labor and tax.

Anyone else experienced this problem or am I special? I am looking forward to my lease end and upgrading hopefully to a 550i.

Haven't heard of that specific issue, but there may be a thread on the Google search. On the bright side, congrats for getting 55K miles on your RSAs! I had them on a 3-series, which I sold at about 35K miles, and they had plenty of tread left. Great tires.

If he's been running those same tires, then at 55K he's over the limit.

Not a special case

I had same problem when I had 60.000km on car. (38k miles). Car was still with warranty, so I got bearings to both side to back axle.

Absolutely bearings should last longer. I noticed that we both have '05 made MY'06 530 Xi. Maybe bearings were not manufactured as they shoud be?

Yes sorry to say out of warranty, but I would have expected better durability out of the bearing. I also would not have expected to replace the valve cover gasket at 40K, or the ECU at 10K. It appears that the tires are the only component that has exceeded my expectations. BMW is lucky that I really enjoy the ride and handling and am overlooking some of these other issues.
