Well BMW drivers....1, 3, 5, 7, M, Z, Mini, am I leaving anybody out? What kind of BLACK BOX is in your car???

Did you request it ? Or was it installed without your consent?
Or, are we driving cars that do not have these Orwellian devices?

If these devices are in our ultimate driving machines-deep in the saddle- with their recording spiders operating for years without our knowledge-is this what we want as our co-pilot on the mid-night ride????

Ohhh yeah. Right you are! Dam.
Anyway-I'm obviously not spending much time in those slinky M6 s or dozing off in the back seat of the RR....But my main thought was-are we (drivers of BMW group vehicles) riding around in autos that contain black boxes? I really don't know. And the recent articles on the news about them being in 64% of all autos sold in the US kinda got my attention. So yes-I apologize if I offended any X-3, X-5 piloti, but what do we know about this issue?

Nothing like the media bringing back an old story from out of the depths. Pretty much all OBDII cars have the ability. So just about any car made since 1997 and sold in the US has this ability.

Hey... guess what... your CC company knows everything you buy too. They track all the purchases. Not just where you shop but also what you shop for. And up until 9/11 the only purchase they didn't keep close tabs on was for books... but guess what?

The right to privacy is narrow and what was protected is not much of a right anymore. At least (I think) you still need a warrant to pull the data from your car.

The car (and most if not all cars with an OBDII interface) have the ability to log how you drive, when you drive, speed, launch angle, whether you span the wheels or not. Whether this data is used in investigating accidents or disputing warranty claims, I don't know. Maybe the readout affects the trade-in value of your car.

Yeah, my car ratted me out to the dealership... It told them about my launches.

Actually, I was upfront with the dealership when I took my car in for service. I told them that my AA wasn't working and that I had used it about 5 - 6 times.
