I'm not a drag racing expert but my best runs are by finding the best launch RPM. Simply rev a bit and drop the clutch. If too low, it bogs and you don't go anywhere. If too high, you get too much wheel spin and go nowhere. A just right RPM is about 1/2 second of wheel spin, hooking up, and taking off. My '02 6 speed M5 was a low 1400 - 1600 RPMs. The 550i with sport auto was about 1800 RPMs.

I don't like how my car pulls in first gear - almost feels like BMW programmed the computer to limit horsepower. The engine feels completely different pulling through the RPMs in 2nd gear.

^That's pretty common for any vehicle. It's not that the manufacture tunes the engine that way, instead it relates to the principal that power output is based on engine load. In 1st gear you simply can't produce enough engine load to demand the maximum power potential of the engine. Whereas for example in 5th gear at WOT the engine load is at 100%.

You can get G meters like the vbox, GTech, or Passport G Timer. I have the Passport and only used it once a long time ago on my 545. Need to get it out from my glovebox and test/practice on the M5.

With a lot of practice, you can get some great times. There were two veteran members here who did a lot of runs on their 545/550 and one of them managed a 4.8 run for his 545 which was essentially stock. Look up threads by member Znod.

I estimate about 5.4 without a good launch, and some bogginess. I feel so dirty ragging on my 550....I just can't get myself to do it. Now the 325 I had I beat into the ground and traded it in before I had problems.
