Question

I'm curious, according the the Feb 2009 BMW Magazine the 2009 BMW Gran Turismo 550i, with a 4.4l V8 has 40 more horsepower and 90 more lb-ft of torque than the 550i with the 4.8l V8.

WTF - how is this possible. We're talking 400 bhp and 450 lb-ft versus 360 and 360 from an engine with .4 less liters.

What did they do to the engine to get this increase and why aren't mod companies out there selling these changes to us? What am i missing here?

From what I've researched on this site, I can expect the following in gains for my 550i with the following mods (trying to use real world numbers and not the extremes sometimes claimed - and even if you jack up some of the numbers below, it could only be by a few hp here and there, you still won't get to 400):

Base 360 bhp

ADD 12 for RPI GT exhaust
ADD 1 for RPI air scoop
ADD 12 for a good tune
ADD 1 for a good replacement air filter like BMC AND charcoal filter removal

New bhp = 386. Not even close to the 400 bhp claimed by BMW for the Gran Turismo, again with a smaller V8 than the 550i.

Not sure about torque increases from the above MODS, but I'm sure nowhere near the 90 which would be needed to reach the level of the Gran Turismo.

I want 400 and 450 in my 550i damnit. What the hell?

The GT has a twin turbocharged engine. The E60 550 has a naturally aspirated engine. That's the big difference. The two cars' engines are totally different.

Really? Well shit they didn't mention that in the magazine. Makes sense and I feel like an idiot once again.

Thanks for educating me on this.

Hey 550, IMO, you really don't have to copy the entire original post in your reply. I read it about 10 seconds before I saw it again on your reply.

Thanks ...

Yes, except that they're likely to still call it a 550i...

I assume that you were referring to me (sdg1871).

Sorry for copying the original post. I was relpying on my Blackberry on the go and just hit "reply" within the original post. I normally don't quote a long original post.

Thanks for watching out for me.

In response to another post from the OP, yes the TTV8 in the 550 version of the GT is expected to be dropped into the F10 550.

F10 =tt v8 found currently in the X6 5.0 and 750I , and derivative in the X5m and X6m
F07 ( 5__gt) will have the same motor on the V8 side of things , a TTv8 in the 4.8-5L area and the TT6 is not the infamous N54 TTi6 but a new dual scroll single turbo I6 named the N55....

The current 550's are a NA tuned
