And no one's mentioned the environment. How sad.

Correct! If money were no object, I would definitely buy a 550 over a 530. However, is the 550 worth the extra $8000? That is the key question and in my opinion it is "no" if one must forgo something else important to swing that $8K. It's all about maximizing total personal utility value.
Only 8k difference between them? I know that is some money to consider but i really think 8k isn't that much for what you get in extra.

This is not the Toyota Prius board!

You do offer a very good point. Unfortunately, unless it has a direct immediate impact on people, it does not carry much importance. This is a bad thing for our grandchildren.

I personally think its worth the extra $8K, but not if one needs to cut back on other things or lives in a congested city where you can't really use the extra power.

Money has always been an important factor in all my decisions. That being said, there are some things I refuse to accept a lesser result. Great seats for a concert are well worth it. And extra horsepower also fits that bill. I just waited longer in my saving regimen to afford the V-8 powered BMW. Sure you will seldom need it, but having it just makes life better. The sense of confidence when passing cannot be understated. Recently I let a young woman I had never met drive my car. She gigled as she watched the traffic disappear in the rear view mirror after the stoplight turned green. That was priceless. If I had another $8000 in my bank account, yeah that would be nice. But if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.

BMW Doug........excellently stated, your observations about the "Obsession with power in our BMW's" was so true of many of us. I guess its man or woman thing. The need for speed etc......etc... Thanks for your comments.

I have noticed something very interesting in reading through the various posts on this forum and other forums. Nobody is ever satisfied with their car. I have read through the various threads such as, "should I get a 525i or 530i", and the prevailing line is, "it's just $4,000 more to go from 215hp to 255hp, pay the $4,000 for the extra power". I have also read through the threads such as, "should I buy a 530i or 550i," and the prevailing line is it only about $6,000 to $8,000 more to get the 550, and now you have a V8!" And, I have read the threads such as "should I buy a 550i or stretch to the M5", and the prevailing line is, "stretch for the M5, and you get an M5!"

(edited)
Not to sound glib, but you've just noticed this now??

This is the precise reason why I'm currently on my 5th divorce ...

I don't understand when people say "when can you use the extra power." I use it everyday, I floor my car frequently. I go fast around turns to the point where the car is sliding and the electric nannies kick in. I have driven every car and motorcycle I've ever owned that way.

Whats that? you shouldnt be driving a BMW in the fisrt place if you were concerned with the enviorment. theres a lot more cars on the road that burn more gas. Say... those things called SUVs? YA till the Gov't decides to ban or TAX SUVs I wont care for the enviorment. TONS of SUVs out there burn more gas than a V8 BMW some even as bad as a V10 BMW they get away from the Gas Guzzler tax WHY?

8K? its that much now? It was $5.5 or $6K for me when I spec-ed my car with equal options... For example Premium package on the 530 adding PDC... adding transmission cost... etc etc... AND for things that you cant even add on the 530 that comes standard on the 545 made the $5.5K or $6K worth it was #124 wheels. Larger NON-Squeeky brakes and larger Exhaust... NOW all this and I havent even mention the extra 100hp.

Oh ya and the rated gas milage on the 545 and 530 is like 1-2mpg difference... yes the gap migh increase if more freeway is driven but its really not that big of a deal.
