I haven't spent much time under the hood of the e60, but on older bmws that would be the power steering reservoir.

it seems to be a yellow ring caught on the top of your power steering fluid reservoir.....

yes that is the power steering fluid.

In case anyone is having trouble following this thread, I'd simply like to add that the thing in the picture with the yellow ring around it is the power steering fluid reservoir...
