I you want to look at some pictures of my car.

This is weird. I went away a little while ago with the family and I took the 535 and my brother in law was following.
He said he kept seeing a grid lowering under my car at different intervals and described it exactly like your picture. I dismissed him as being bonkers and forgot about it.
Throughout the holiday I was switching between DS and D mode dependent on the road we were driving on.
It seems he was seeing this thing lower when I switched between the modes.
Still have no idea what it is though!!!

I just recently saw one of those things sticking down as I was driving behind another E60. I don't remember ever seeing it before so I was wondering the same thing. It clearly looks like some sort of heat sink for the rear end or something but I'm going to have to do some more digging to see if I can get some concrete information...

I think they're cooling fins on the heat sink for the rear differential...
Check out the part diagram:

And check out the picture near the end of the following document:

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
The heatsink is cast into the rear end housing, I think the cage we are discussing just protects the cast fins. I have hit it going over speed bumps.
I don't think Rudy's link shows the actual part.
