If I disconnect the battery and touch the positive and negative terminals together? Someone told me that this will clear the system fault codes.

I'm not sure if that is a good thing to do. Some of the models have auxillary battery to store the memory. I just found out about this so called battery and it is mounted on the rear drivers side fender well in the trunk. It actually looks like an amp rather than a regular battery.

Are you suggesting disconnecting the car from the battery terminals, and connecting the positive and negative terminals of the battery with a single wire? Because thats generally a bad idea even with a small battery let alone a car battery.

When we get bored in physics labs we vaporize copper wires by laying them across car batteries. Literally it turns the copper from solid into a gas. |
he means touch the battery cables together, not short the battery terminals!
but I agree with the others, worked on older BMWs, but between the IBS on the negative cable and the pyrotechnics on the positive cable I wouldn't do it on the E60 |
i wouldnt do it. you are essentially shorting any capacitors that may be storing power.
