Hi guys, I'm trying to find where an oil leak is coming from, but in the mean time I noticed some build up of oil or grease on this unit. Is it part of the active steering? Its mounted in the center of the frame in front of the jack point. Looks like it has seen better days, the fittings that go into it look a little rusty. car has 60k miles on it.

Thanks for the help

That is your dynamic drive thing on your front swaybar. I don't remember what the actual unit is called, PM member Healthservices, he would know what it's called.

that is your active roll bar, which keepe your car level in the turns.
is fluid dripping on to it from above? also, check to make sure the two large hydraulic hoses on the left are tight. the two plastic tubes on the right are just vent tubes.

here is a video of a test.

How do you make your car do that?

Look at my thread: https://5series.net/forums/topic/122...n-a-2007-550i/ That's the active roll bar thingy. It twists the front roll bars to keep the car level in turns. It may have a leak, or it may be getting dripped upon from above. Take photos looking from beneath at the parts above it. If everything above is dry, the unit is probably leaking. If things above have oil on them, you've got an engine leak somewhere. My car is currently in the shop getting just such a leak fixed.

thanks for the responses guys. nothing is leaking from above, all is clean...almost like it was new. What I thought was oil leaking, was really tranny fluid leaking from the pan gasket. I'll check today and make sure the two hydraulic hoses are tight.

That active front sway bar runs about $1600. If you decide not to fix it, keep an eye on your power steering fluid level. That's where the active suspension gets its hydraulic power.

A good thing to check periodically- CHeck the lines are tight and not leaking because of loose fittings. The dealer might try and sell you this expensive Bar!

I've seen a lot of these. Take the plastic covers off and spray some engine degreaser on the entire area then watch for leaks whereever thery are. Tranny fluid are lifetime and so the gasket too is also lifetime. so i doubt it would EVER leak. Besides it being a lifetime part and NEVER needing maintenance.....tranny pan is pretty far back anyway.

Come on guys BMW even says so!
