Guys,

I've driven automatic for my whole life and a steptronic for my 530.Im afraid im gonna regret the smg in my m5..Is it that hard to master?Dont you get tired from shifting down/up?Sorry if these questions have been answered before because i still dont understand
From reading the post i get that smg can downshift/upshift by itself if its strain(rev max)?
Sorry i just have no clue on smg and i plan to try one..

This is my first auto box, and it seems fine. (and I'm no grandad, i'm 27!) I like the ease of driving, and the e60 is a cruise missile as opposed to a bullet. Also my better half prefers the automatic.

I chose manual in my e46 m3, for me it's the only way to drive such a car, although it was as heavy as a truck! My better half couldn't operate the clutch in traffic, although this was a great excuse for me not to lend her the car!

Steptronic. Don't regret it because i like those soft changes, and that's like medicine in city driving (where 95% i drive). But i would have liked more the smg. Too bad it wasn't possible. Maybe on my next one i'll get the smg (m5 ). It's even wierd to put a smg on a diesel imo. Smg is for petrol that's for sure and reavvy engines like bmw has. I will never ever buy another car in my life that has manual, that's a fact!

For those of you have SMG, do you prefer current paddle shift (one for up and down shift) or M-style one (left for down shift and right for upshift)?

steptronic with SMG paddles retrofit (from Hobi) the best option IMHO.
so comfi in the city and trafic to use D mode and when on highway or curly twisty country roads the manual mode with the paddles engaged allowing me to hold the wheel with both hands but yet change the gears how I need and actually downshift for real. Love it, feels like manual. However I must admit that without the paddles or without the manual shifting in DS mode the steptronic ihas a very little delays eg. in twisty roads and overpassing.

However I would not go for manual in E60-traffic too heavy those days so it is actually annoing.
