What turns on when you insert key

I have a 545 and am curious if anyone knows what turns on when you just insert the key. I know you get the little key inserted icon and the key battery begins charging, but does anything else turn on behind the scenes? My wife sat in my car chatting with one of her friends the other night with just the key sitting in the ignition and killed the battery.

Assuming the doors are already unlocked, if the car is off and you just insert the key, only the small indicator display lights up.
If you turn off the ignition and juse leave the key in the car, power to just about all of the accessories will stay on for several minutes. If you have a bluetooth phone or are using telematics, this will continue to operate until you disconnect the call.

As for what turns on when I put the key in the ignition....I do to some degree!
