I used to get my metal inflation valve caps stolen all the time, now I use black plastic ones and I've never had one stolen.
Why would poeple steal a 50 cent metal inflation vavle cap ?
Oh ! and I have that same cover on my rear m sport bumper, it covers the tow-bar.

I don't know why they would do it, but it's not the first I hear about it.
A friend of mine kept buying "///M styled", chromed out valve caps for his E46 M3, and they would consistently get stolen/replaced by him/stolen/replaced etc....
So I'm left to think there's a very happy guy out there with a duffle bag full of $1 caps

Or, maybe, since your car is so new, it may not have been secured properly when the car was lashed down for shipping and fell off. See if your dealer would replace it as a courtesy.
